| Description |
Big Bear Creek is only worth running if you show up and it's flooding the farmers fields at the put in with muddy water. Look for something above 30K on the Clearwater, in which case, it's worth doing. Drive west of Deary two miles, then turn left and drive 2 miles or until you feel like getting in. The take out is upstream from the high school in Kendrick.
The river is flat and meandering for the first 2.5 miles. Then you enter a gorge and some nice continuous class III action keeps you busy for a while. After a few more miles you'll hear a thundering sound and see a horizon line. This is the triple waterfall, portage right (it has been run). Generally the main double drop is portaged while the lower ~7 footer is run on the right. In any case, it's a nice place to eat lunch and fantasize about your line. After lunch the action picks up again and there's one more big IV before the river mellows out as the gorge opens up a bit a few miles above the take out. But don't let your guard down as there are lots of fences crossing the river, and at these flows you won't have eddies to save you. Wire cutters could come in handy since Idaho law prohibits putting a fence across any navigable stream.
